Two Delta planes collided Tuesday morning while taxiing on the tarmac of an Atlanta airport, the airline confirmed in a statement. No injuries were reported.
The wing of one plane, an Airbus A350 headed to Tokyo, struck the tail of a second plane, an Endeavor Air CRJ-900 headed to Lafayette, La., according to statements from the airline and from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The FAA said the incident took place “at the intersection of two taxiways” at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Delta said the wing of one plane and the tail of the other were damaged by the collision but that there were no injuries “at this time.”
The FAA said it will investigate the incident.
Delta’s statement indicated the airline “is cooperating” with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) “and other authorities on this incident.”
After the incident, passengers were transported back to the gate, where the airline said they would be “reaccommodated on alternative flights.”
Delta said there were 221 customers on the flight to Tokyo, and there were 56 customers on the regional flight to Lafayette.
By early afternoon, the airport was experiencing significant delays. Delays affected a total of 112 departing and arriving flights. Five percent of departing flights were delayed, and 4 percent of arriving flights were delayed, according to FlightAware’s delay tracker.
